Bathroom Remodeling 101

Your bathroom is your private sanctuary; it should be a place where you can go to relax and de-stress after a long day. Do you feel that way about your bathroom, or could it use a bit of a face lift?

If you’re thinking of remodeling your bathroom into a spa-like retreat, there are certainly ways to transform the space. And while it’s not always an easy task, there are some tips and tricks that can make the remodeling project much easier. Consider these suggestions to re-design your bathroom into the spacious and welcoming spot you’ve been dreaming about:

  1. Clean and De-Clutter

In our last blog we discussed the importance of de-cluttering and cleaning the home as a way of improving the space prior to re-designing. De-cluttering in the bathroom will also be necessary before re-modeling, so empty out the cupboards, get rid of empty soap bottles and give every surface a scrub.

After you’re done the spring cleaning portion, you may be able to prioritize on certain aspects that need more help than others. For example, you may need to upgrade the shower head and tiles, or you may just need to do an intense cleaning to make them look brand new. If you’ve decided to replace tiles, consider investing in stylish, water-resistant tiles that will last much longer.

  1. Stick to a Budget

Remodeling will mean investing some of your earnings into upgrades in the bathroom, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t find budget-friendly options. You don’t have to use all your savings to afford over-the-top bathroom vanities– rather, do some research and look for DIY projects you can try on your own or ask someone for help. Even if you’re not replacing everything in the bathroom, a fresh coat of paint on old appliances can do a world of good for the overall appearance. Be honest about your DIY skills and get a friend to help if you’re not totally confident.

Important: Knowing what you can afford to spend will make it a lot easier to decide what items you want to replace and where you need to get creative!

  1. Circulate the Air

Proper interior ventilation is a must in a bathroom. Mold and mildew will make quick work of any still water or moisture so be sure to install a fan that is appropriate for the square footage of your bathroom. Exhaust the room and make sure that the air is circulating to create a more relaxing ambiance in your bathroom.

  1. Improve Lighting

In our last blog we also mentioned that the key to a warm and welcoming appearance in a home is great lighting. The same goes for your bathrooms as well! Decide on a theme and colors for your bathroom and then choose light fixtures that resonate those styles. If you can, try installing a dimmer to create various moods throughout the day.

Important: Sconce lighting at the vanity is the ideal way to get even lighting on your face, and installing it at eye level will help diminish unflattering shadows. Dim lighting is nice for a relaxing bath; bright lights are great for shaving or applying makeup. Need some help with lighting choices? This lighting guideline can help you with some inspiration!

Re-modeling your bathroom is a great way to increase the value of your home and create a relaxing space for you and your family. Consider the tips provided to upgrade your bathroom whether you’re looking for an extravagant change or a budget-friendly project.
