Public Schools

The Birmingham metropolitan area, though primarily serviced by the schools of Birmingham City School System, Shelby County School System and Jefferson County Schools, has a number of independent school districts that offer regional students a wide variety of choice in education. Smaller, independent school systems serving the Birmingham area include Alabama School of Fine Arts School District, Bessemer City School District, Fairfield City School District, Homewood City School District, Hoover City School District, Leeds City School District, Midfield City School District, Mountain Brook City School District, Tarrant City School District, Trussville City School District, and Vestavia Hills City School District. In 2005, Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School ranked #1 as the top high school in the United States by Newsweek magazine and has remained in the publications Top 5 in the years following.
